It ended a massive civil war against the remnantsof the old Czarist military system and established institutionsin government. He later died in 1924, and was quicklysucceeded. In 1924 Joseph Stalin became head of theSoviet Communist Party. He soon became the mostpowerful man in Russia . He ran the Soviet Union with brutpower, removing all that opposed him and the Communistbeliefs. This judgment of conviction period was known as the Great Purge.Stalin systemically executed anyone who stood in his path.Stalin had millions of people arrested and killed. Thegovernment once again changed in its economic status. Allprivate ownership was ended. Industrializationcommenced, and the strength of the Soviets Militarysignificantly increased. The only downfall was agricultureproduction slowly diminished. This eventually led to foodshortages. During this measure period the Second World Warbroke out and drained most of what was left of the alreadyimpoverished state.
